Kathe Mai

Kathe Mai discovered her love for jewelry making at the age of 17, sparked by a fascination with the raw beauty of nature. After high school, her first job at a “rock shop” ignited a lifelong passion, shaping a career defined by craftsmanship, curiosity, and artistry. Over the years, Kathe has become a respected expert in the industry, with experience ranging from custom design to large-scale brand collaborations, creating everything from limited-edition styles to one-of-a-kind pieces.

At the jeweler’s bench, Kathe thrives in every stage, even in its messiest stages—those transitional moments before a piece reveals its final form. She finds joy in the process and is regularly learning new metalworking techniques, continually refining her skills. Living in the Pacific Northwest, Kathe draws inspiration from the natural world—from rivers to forests—and reflects this connection through her commitment to responsible sourcing. Every material is chosen with care and respect for the Earth, its resources, and the cultural wisdom Kathe has encountered throughout her life.

With the love, support, and daily inspiration from her husband, three amazing children, and cherished grandbaby, Kathe continues to handcraft meaningful jewelry that celebrates life’s beauty, one exquisite piece at a time. Kathe and her husband Eric Braunwart co-own Columbia Gem House, one of our trusted Beaumont Jewelry Collective gemstone suppliers.

Designer Q+A:

#1. Q: Can you share a motto, mantra, quote or verse that serves as a continual source of inspiration for you?

A: “I’m looking for something that is true, honest, and feels like me.” This mantra is evident in every piece I bring to life.

#2. Q: Why is having a positive impact through jewelry important to you?

A:  Because I have a personal love and respect for:

- Our earth and all her gifts. Life, water, stones, air, plants, trees, animals…
- Beautiful diversities and wisdoms of people and cultures I have experienced through worldwide travel.
- Gratitude and finding fairness and ways to give back
- Acknowledging the gifts and listening to the unique needs of each person/place
- Hearing and seeking out the possibilities surrounding us as to how we can improve for the greater good

#3. Q: What’s your favorite gemstone and why? (If it’s too hard to pick one, what are your top 3?!)

A: Tourmaline, corundum, and gem silica chrysocolla. Decisions on things like this are incredibly difficult for me… but the first two because they have the most color variations, so even with these, I could at least still have all the colors. I love so so many others, which of course being a part of Columbia Gem House does not make this any easier! Because I have so many beautiful and meaningful gems close by on a daily basis. I could probably go on and on here, so I will try to keep it to that.
