Designer Q+A:

#1. Q: Can you share a motto, mantra, quote or verse that serves as a continual source of inspiration for you?

A: My grandmother Mazari always used to say, “do good deeds and throw them in the river”—it’s an old Afghan proverb and I find myself returning to this continuously in business and in life. It reminds me that whatever beauty or good I’m trying to create is enough in and of itself and that somehow it will cleanse and purify my way forward.

#2. Q: Why is having a positive impact through jewelry important to you?

A: For me, making a positive impact in the world is central to my existence and has taken different forms throughout my life. I think being a refugee and growing up with the constant awareness that I had it so much better than the majority of the world really pushed me to want to help others who did not have the same opportunities.

Similarly, jewelry has always been an important part of my identity and particularly of my connection to my heritage. When I finally decided to take the leap into creating jewelry, I knew it would have to be in a way that would improve peoples’ lives and respect and honor our collective home here on Earth—that is the core principal of Mazahri.

#3. Q: What’s your favorite gemstone and why? (If it’s too hard to pick one, what are your top 3?!)

A: This one is hard! I’d have to say it is a toss-up between Panjsher Emeralds and Jegdalek Rubies!

But if I could only work with one type of gemstone it would be corundum (covering sapphires and rubies) or tourmaline, because both have such an incredible range of colors. I love color!
