Get to Know the Designer: Twyla Dill

When Twyla Dill was nineteen, she moved to Istanbul, Turkey, a city where every street hums with history, beauty, texture, and inspiration. Surrounded by centuries of art, architecture, craft, and culture, Twyla found herself drawn to the small details that make handmade work feel so meaningful. One afternoon, her friend’s mother placed a tiny crochet hook in her hand and showed her how to make lace. That simple moment changed everything.

What began as curiosity soon became an obsession, then a true devotion. Lace became her language. Twyla started weaving stories into delicate threads, learning how each loop, knot, and pattern could become something expressive and deeply personal. At first, she used her lacework to adorn leather and wooden circles. Over time, those same patterns began to take on a new life, eventually transforming into fine handmade jewelry with a style all her own.

Today, Twyla Dill’s designs begin in a way that feels both delicate and intentional. Each piece starts with a 0.55mm crochet hook and a single strand of cotton thread. Twyla first crochets the lace by hand, carefully shaping the design before it is later cast into metal. Through this process, every loop, knot, and texture is preserved. The softness of thread is captured in a material meant to last for generations.

What was once fleeting becomes timeless. Lace, something often thought of as soft and temporary, is captured in metal and turned into fine handmade jewelry that can be worn, loved, and passed down. Her work holds onto the feeling of handmade lace while giving it the strength and permanence of silver and gold. It is this balance between softness and structure that makes her jewelry so distinct.

Twyla’s designs are born from travel, love, and the people who inspire her. They carry the spirit of adventure, the touch of handmade craft, and the strength of metal. Every curve and stitch is a celebration of individuality, of what makes you you. Her pieces feel personal because they begin with the hand, the thread, and the care of a maker who values beauty in even the smallest details.

Her work also reflects the heart behind fine handmade jewelry. Each piece has a story before it ever becomes jewelry. It begins as lace, created slowly and carefully by hand. Then, through casting, that lace becomes metal without losing the detail of the original design. The result is jewelry that feels intricate, meaningful, and full of character.

We asked Twyla a few questions so you could get to know her even better!

Q: Can you share a motto, mantra, quote, or verse that serves as a continual source of inspiration for you?

A: As long as you don’t give up, you’ll get where you want to be. I don’t know who said it, or if it was one person in particular, but it reminds me that with consistent work and small changes, so much is possible!

Q: Why is having a positive impact through jewelry important to you?

A: When I started my business, I just wanted to make crochet earrings. As I’ve grown and moved into fine jewelry over the last 11 years, I’ve come to realize how much harm there can be with mining of gemstones and metals. I know nothing is perfect, but I’m committed to choosing options that have the least negative human and environmental impact. As I grow and am able to, I will continue to improve my sourcing and practices.

My goal with my jewelry is to bring more beauty into the world. I can’t claim to be making the world a more beautiful place if people and the environment are hurt in the process.

Q: What’s your favorite gemstone and why?

A: I’m absolutely head over heels in love with tsavorite and grossular garnets. The vibrant greens make me swoon, and there are currently multiple gems that I’m manifesting for myself from Anza Gems.
